The weird short stories involving a fictionalized version of me and my friends might sound self-indulgent, but the idea came from watching Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu (The High School Life of a Fudanshi).

In Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu, the main character Ryo Sakaguchi is a high school boy who is obsessed with boy’s love (BL) manga, the genre of male homosexual romance with a primarily female audience. Female fans of the genre are referred to as “fujoshi” while the male fans are “fudanshi”. Ryo is straight, but most of his friends have suspicions otherwise. (His parents seem to have zero presence in his life thus far.) The anime adaptation I watched is about five minutes per episode and features parodies of popular tropes within the genre. The episodes remain nonexplicit.

In the first episode, Ryo confides to his friend (Toshiaki Nakamura) that he wants more fudanshi friends. Nakamura recommends Ryo to try social media, but Ryo laments that the internet is not so kind. He shows Nakamura a reply on social media that accuses him of being a girl with a fake profile of a boy. Considering the worst that could happen on social media, not bad at all and even charmingly benign.
